The Earthshot Prize initiative is a bold movement, started in 2020, with the promotion and backing of Prince William and other concerned citizens from all sectors of society. Modeled after John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot goal to land a man on the moon within a decade, the Earthshot provides people of this decade a chance to take action to repair and restore our shared home, Planet Earth.

We start this new decade [in 2020] knowing that it is the most consequential period in history. The science is irrefutable. If we do not act in this decade, the damage that we have done will be irreversible. And the effects felt not just by future generations but by all of us alive today…this damage will not be felt equally by everyone. It is the most vulnerable, those with the fewest resources and those who’ve done the least to cause climate change who will be impacted the most.
Prince William is joined and supported by the Global Alliance, his wife Kate, David Attenborough, and many other organizations and people around the globe to move this project forward.

The Earthshot Prize: All Winners & Finalists

The Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance is truly a collaborative effort, bringing the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon, waymakers, and scientists together to bring awareness to the wider world for the need protect this sacred place.
Indigenous peoples, since time immemorial, are defenders, are guardians, and we are part of the natural ecosystem. We have sacred places, waterfalls, mountains, [and] trees. We have learned from them. Our learning is through spiritual connection. Nature has taught us through this spiritual connection that it is time to act together.

With all these amazing innovators and way-makers, our future is hopeful. Collectively, we can all support the efforts of these Earthshot Prize recipients and nominees, AND we can do our small part to help repair our shared home, Mother Earth, and create a fair, equitable, and sustainable future for present and future generations.
Our everyday actions can and do make a difference. Just begin by making a conscious effort to change one small habit a week that leads to a bigger, sustainable impact overall. I’ve incorporated the Earthshot Prize initiative into my college English classes’ curriculum. As I’ve read about my students’ heartfelt concerns for our environment and their optimism for a healthier planet for all people, I am honored to be their teacher. Investing this knowledge, one person at a time, will make a difference.
